In (or Out Of) Pocket: A Drum Session With Black Stone Cherry
Setting the Stage:
When Black Stone Cherry walked into the Studio, they weren’t here to mess around — they came to track drums that hit like a freight train. With a new project underway, the band wanted a space that could capture the grit, groove, and organic power they’re known for — and we were all in.
The Artist:
Known for their hard-hitting blend of Southern rock, heavy groove and monstrous chorus melodies, Black Stone Cherry brings a signature sound that lives and breathes in the rhythm section. This session focused on laying down drums with John Fred Young, whose playing is as fierce as it is musical.

The Session (Gear + Studio Power):
Tracking took place in our live room, chosen for its bombastic energy, low-end punch and ambient control. We ran a combo of vintage and modern gear — think Neve/API preamps, Pultec and SSL EQ’s, a well-placed Sennheiser MD441 on snare, and multiple room mics dialed for controlled chaos.
“The room just sang — especially on the Kick and Floor Toms,” said Marc Owens (Assistant Engineer/In-House Drum Tech). “Everything had a weight and punch without getting muddy or swimmy sounding!”

Behind the Kit:
John Fred brought his A-game: full of attitude, dynamics, and precision. The standout moment? Realizing how much life and energy was being injected into the songs! “These takes feel amazing — no grid, Just great performances breathing the way a song should” said Chris Robertson (Singer/Lead Guitar) as Steve Jewel (Bass) and Ben Wells (Rhythm Guitar) lit up.
Looking Ahead:
These drum takes are headed straight into Black Stone Cherry’s next release, and we’re proud to have laid the foundation. Big thanks to the band for bringing the fire and trusting our team to deliver!
